FAQs

What is Alpaca Wool?

Natural Fiber
Alpaca wool is 100% natural, biodegradable, and renewable. Our garments are soft, durable, and kind to the planet.

Alpaca wool is prized for its incredible softness and warmth, making it a popular choice for cosy sweaters, scarves, and other cold-weather clothing. Unlike sheep's wool, alpaca wool is hypoallergenic, which means it's less likely to cause allergies or itching.

It comes in a variety of natural colours, including shades of white, brown, and grey, and can be blended to create a wide range of beautiful, durable, and luxurious textiles.

What makes alpaca products so high in price?

Alpaca products are costly due to their exceptional quality, limited natural supply, labour-intensive craftsmanship, ethical farming practices, sustainability, durability, and unique characteristics, including thermal and hypoallergenic properties.

Although our products are made in Australia, our prices are really competitive with alpaca products from overseas.

How does alpaca fibre differ from any other wool?

Alpaca fibre differs from traditional wool in several ways. It's exceptionally soft and lightweight, making it more comfortable to wear with excellent thermal properties. Alpaca wool is also warmer than sheep's wool and less likely to cause itching or allergies, as it's hypoallergenic. Additionally, alpaca fibre comes in a broader range of natural colours and is known for its strength and durability.

Are the colours natural or dyed?

We offer both! Our collection includes beautiful natural alpaca colours as well as dyed options. All dyed colours carry international certification confirming they are free from harmful substances, so you can wear them with complete peace of mind.

Are your products suitable for people with sensitive skin?

Absolutely. For those with very sensitive skin, we especially recommend our products made with Mohair Alpaca and Baby Alpaca fibres. These are exceptionally soft to the touch and gentle against the skin, making them ideal for even the most delicate skin types.

How is alpaca fibre sourced ethically?

Alpaca fibre is harvested through a gentle shearing process that is completely safe and stress-free for the animals. Alpacas are shorn once a year — a process that is actually beneficial to their health and comfort, particularly during warmer months. We are committed to working only with suppliers who uphold the highest standards of animal welfare, ensuring every fibre is obtained with care and respect.

What makes Alpaca Shop Australia a sustainable brand?

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We practise a closed-loop approach: every garment is knitted locally in Australia, which eliminates unnecessary international transport and significantly reduces our carbon footprint. By producing locally, we also support Australian artisans and create meaningful employment within our community.

We believe that true sustainability means making fewer, better things — timeless pieces crafted to last a lifetime, not fast fashion destined for landfill. From fibre to finished garment, every step reflects our commitment to people, animals, and the planet.

Can I place a custom or wholesale order?

Absolutely! Custom and wholesale orders are something we truly love. Over the years, we have had the pleasure of bringing dozens of unique projects to life — from personalised footy team sweaters and creations for emerging designers at TAFE, to corporate gifting for universities and organisations looking for something truly special for their staff. We also specialise in extra-large sizes, crafted to the same premium standard as the rest of our collection, because we believe great style should be available to everyone.

Whether you have a specific design in mind, need a particular size, or want guidance from scratch, we'd love to hear from you. Reach out at alpacashop.au@gmail.com and let's create something extraordinary together.

Can I visit the store in Adelaide and shop in person?

Yes, and we warmly welcome you! Our Adelaide store is more than just a shop — it is a showroom where you can experience our full collection of garments, yarns, and knitting patterns in person. Here you can touch and feel every fibre, explore our latest designs, and place a bespoke order in your preferred size, colour, and style.

Our garments are crafted using state-of-the-art knitting technology — German Stoll and Japanese Shima Seiki machines — and all our yarns are 100% pure alpaca, never blended with polyester. Every price includes GST, and all orders within Australia enjoy free shipping via Australia Post.

Please note that our production is intentionally limited — not by choice alone, but because pure alpaca fibre is a rare and precious natural resource. We are not fast fashion. Each piece is made with care, precision, and purpose, and once a design sells out, it may not return. We encourage you to secure your favourite pieces while they are available.

For customers across the rest of Australia and internationally, we offer a seamless online shopping experience with worldwide delivery.
