How to Wash My Baby Alpaca Mohair Throw Blanket
What You'll Need
- A large tub or bath
- Tepid warm water
- A mild wool wash shampoo
- A few dry towels
- A flat area to lay the blanket to dry
- A soft natural bristle hairbrush
Step 1 — Fill the tub with tepid water
Use warm (not hot) water with a mild wool wash detergent. Never use hot water — it can cause shrinkage and colour loss.

Step 2 — Soak
Submerge the blanket and let it soak for a few minutes to loosen any dirt.
Step 3 — Gently agitate
Very gently swish the blanket through the water with your hands to dislodge dirt particles. Do not over-work the fibres.
Tip: Hand washing is recommended because you can control the amount of friction. Even a gentle machine wool cycle can be too rough for fluffy alpaca or mohair throws.

Step 4 — Rinse
Lay the blanket flat on a clean towel or dry surface. Gently smooth it out with your hands and let it air-dry naturally.

Step 5 — Remove excess water
Do not wring or twist. Lay the blanket flat on dry towels and gently press to absorb the water.

Step 6 — Dry flat
Lay flat on clean towels away from direct sunlight. Smooth out any wrinkles by hand. It will dry quickly.

Step 7 — Brush to restore fluffiness
Once dry, a light brush will restore the wool pile and make it look like new. Find the correct direction of the wool's grain before brushing.

Dry Cleaning
Alpaca and mohair throws can also be dry-cleaned by a reputable cleaner.
